ABOUT THE PROJECT
If you are an MD interested in a PhD Integrating research into clinical practice, this project is for you.
The Physician Scientist project is promoted by Italian Association for Cancer Research Foundation ETS (AIRC) and Cariplo Foundation (FC), and supported by European School of Molecular Medicine (SEMM) and the University of Milan in the context of the Systems Medicine PhD program. It is designed to innovate and strengthen training pathways for physician scientists interested in cancer research, promoting their role in translating recent breakthroughs into patient benefit through personalized and precision medicine approaches. It combines advanced research with mandatory clinical practice.
ELIGIBILITY
The Physician Scientist Project is open to Medical Doctors who:
- are starting the final year of residency exclusively in Italy on November 1, 2026
-have completed or are completing the residency program in Italy or abroad, between November 2025 and November 2026. For medical specialty qualifications awarded abroad, applicants must provide the Italian Ministry of Health decree recognizing their eligibility to practice as a medical specialist in Italy.
WHAT'S UNIQUE ABOUT THE PROJECT
- Can combine the last year of residency with the first year of PhD training
-Enhanced scholarship: To reflect the dual research-clinical commitment of these students, a fully funded scholarship of € 40,000 gross/year will cover the three years following the last year of the school of specialty. Students will also have available a student budget for travelling to conference/workshops/training courses.
-Cutting edge cancer research: Doctoral students will work in top-tier labs funded by AIRC grants across Italy. Main research areas covered are: Cancer Biology, Computational Biology, Genomic Medicine, Immunology, Molecular Therapy.
-Retain Clinical activity (20% of time) over the course of PhD training
