More than 20% of global deaths from cancer, nearly two million every year, are connected to tobacco use. Prevent20 is a global coalition of cancer groups calling on governments to increase taxes on tobacco products as a cancer prevention strategy.
The Prevent20 campaign brings together charities, organisations and other movements of all sizes to provide a strong message of unity and urgency to persuade policy makers to act. The EACR has joined over 20 cancer organisations all over the world from Canada to Japan, New Zealand to Zambia.
As the largest single source of cancer deaths worldwide, reducing tobacco usage is an important step to preventing cancer cases. Raising the taxes on tobacco would be an effective way of not only reducing tobacco usage but of dissuading new users from starting by making it less affordable.
Together, the trusted voices of cancer organisations worldwide can compel our governments to take action to raise tobacco taxes and use the funds to support cancer research priorities and treatment.
