The route towards EACR support and partnership

National Society membership of EACR

Thirteen (13) National Societies are now established members of EACR as ‘Society Members’. This represents a doubling of membership over the past four years.

Why is membership of EACR by National Societies popular?

Over 6,000 cancer researchers are members of EACR by virtue of their National Society membership in Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Turkey and the U.K. and enjoy full membership benefits. Our website www.eacr.org highlights these benefits.

  • Affiliated National Societies find it helpful to be able to offer EACR membership as part of their own benefits package. (Access to the EACR Travel Fellowship scheme, bursaries for the EACR congress and reduced registration rates for the EACR and ECCO congresses)
  • Member Societies may use EACR's Year Book, weekly e-News bulletin and website to reach 9,000+ EACR members with information about meetings and activities that could be of interest to researchers across Europe and internationally
  • Partnerships are now developing for running focussed scientific meetings and courses with National Societies and other organisations
  • Presidents of National Societies now have an ex-officio seat on the EACR Council which meets annually. This advisory body has a new remit and helps shape EACR policy and generate opportunities for partnership working.

What is the cost of membership to National Societies?

Our present ‘Society Members’ pay in the range of 6 - 10 Euros per member per annum for membership, this includes a small contribution (1 euro) towards the mailing costs of the Year Book and Membership Pack. The range represents 10% of the societies' annual fees or a minimum of 6 Euros. However, difficulty of payment of fees at the outset is not be allowed to get in the way of EACR affiliation and support - particularly when a society or network is in its early stages: EACR does not charge a membership fee in the year the society is accepted as a National Society member and the following ‘full year’ membership fee is collected in arrears.

Is support available for National Society Meetings?

EACR may offer modest levels of sponsorship for a National Society Meeting where the talks are in English and will attract an audience from outside national boundaries. Sponsorship can be general and/or tied to a particular speaker to meet expenses. We also offer poster prizes.

A network seeking to form a National Society may also request support and include a short introductory talk about EACR at a ‘start up’ meeting.

A first step is to contact kathryn.wass@nottingham.ac.uk who will provide the appropriate information about sponsorship applications and mutually supportive promotional activity. Any applications are considered by the ‘Education and Meetings Committee’ of EACR.

How do societies apply for membership?

'Collective membership can be obtained by National and European scientific societies for cancer research. The application is signed by the President of that society. It will be considered by the Executive Committee for approval'. EACR By-Laws

Established Societies

Gaining membership is very straightforward for established societies. A society that has its own Annual Meeting, an electronic database of membership information, a secretariat to liaise with and, most importantly, an enthusiasm for working with EACR on shared aims is likely to be welcomed quickly as a member.

New Societies

EACR will actively support members seeking to form a National Society. The EACR Secretariat and Executive Committee are available for advice and practical help. Society membership is applied for when an independent and fully constituted association is established.

National Societies in Croatia and Turkey have become well established following this route.
