Eurocancercoms
The Project
EACR was a partner in the Eurocancercoms project (http://www.eurocancercoms.eu/), a 2 year FP7-funded European Commission project with the goal to provide ‘proof of concept’ for establishing a single, efficient network for cancer communication in Europe. The project aimed to use web technology to create an integrated ‘hub’ for patients, policymakers, researchers and healthcare professionals to access and share information.
The scope of what we call ‘cancer information’ is vast, covering everything from patient information to on-line educational tools for clinicians and cutting edge informatic tools for cancer biologists working at the bench. This information is fractured across the Internet, which means it is less integrated, of lower quality and less accessible to the European community. This project aimed to reverse these trends and provide novel ways to turn cancer information into intelligence.
EACR’s role in the project was to tap into the collective knowledge of our member base of researchers to identify their information needs, attitudes and ideas, conduct background research and gather useful information. We conducted 3 Europe-wide member surveys: on communication and use of the Web, on the use of NCI’s caBIG bioinformatics tools, and on issues surrounding Open Access publishing. Several papers have been written as part of the project research – these are available to read in the ‘Papers’ section.
The final deliverable of the project is ecancerHub Beta, an integrated social platform for all parties involved in cancer. To visit the beta site and contribute, go to http://www.ecancerhub.eu/.
